CAPOLAVORI DA RIVEDERE: IN DVD, STREAMING, VOD...

Forse il più bel film di Joseph Losey, certamente fra i più compiuti della carriera di un regista che è sempre stato incostante. Come tutto il cinema più grande, MESSAGGERO D'AMORE vive in funzione dello sfondo, che non è semplice decorazione, ma continuazione attiva del significato del racconto.

Dopo un inizio magistrale, dove poche sequenze di brevissime, acute osservazioni gli bastano per esporre il tema della pellicola intera (la decadenza di una classe e di un momento sociale viste da un adolescente), Losey riesce ad inserire i caratteri del film, perfettamente disegnati, in una visione estremamente armoniosa. All'interno della campagna inglese direttamente ispirata dalla pittura dell'Ottocento inglese, nella vicenda di un giovane povero in visita a degli amici ricchi, il regista inglese fonde mirabilmente la critica sociale, la crisi dell'adolescenza e la pittura di un'epoca. Osservando, sin dalle primissime sequenze del film, i caratteri dei personaggi con un'attenzione scrupolosa, inserendoli nel gioco di una architettura criticamente esemplare, proietta i propri personaggi in un gioco di rapporti continui, di rinvii psicologici inseriti fra la polemica dell'assunto ed i significati formali.

Lungi dal diventare un puro compiacimento decorativo, lo sguardo del regista acquista così un significato autonomo. Grazie alla maturità della visione, alla sua logica ed al suo rigore, il linguaggio permette qui una rielaborazione continua di quelle che sono le intenzioni della sceneggiatura (che, come in tutti i migliori film di Losey, da IL SERVO a ACCIDENT, è del commediografo Harold Pinter) per sfociare in un affresco dalla meravigliosa duplicità, tra raffinatezza astratta e pragmatismo morale.

Perhaps the most beautiful film by Joseph Losey, certainly one of the most accomplished in the career of a director who has always been inconstant. Like all great cinema,THE GO - BETWEEN lives in function of the background, which is not a simple decoration, but an active continuation of the meaning of the story.

After a masterly start, where a few sequences of very brief, acute observations are enough to expose the theme of the whole film (the decadence of a class and a social moment seen by a teenager), Losey manages to insert the characters of the film, perfectly drawn, in an extremely harmonious vision. Within the english countryside directly inspired by nineteenth-century English painting, in the story of a poor young man visiting rich friends, the english director admirably blends social criticism, the crisis of adolescence and the painting of an era. Observing, from the very first sequences of the film, the characters' characters with scrupulous attention, inserting them in a game of critically exemplary architecture, he projects his characters in a game of continuous relationships, of psychological references inserted between the polemic of the assumption and formal meanings.

Far from becoming pure decorative complacency, the director's gaze thus acquires an autonomous meaning. Thanks to the maturity of the vision, its logic and its rigour, the language here allows a continuous reworking of what are the intentions of the screenplay (which, as in all the best films of Losey, from THE SERVANT to ACCIDENT, is by the playwright Harold Pinter) to result in a fresco of wonderful duplicity, between abstract refinement and moral pragmatism.
